A married couple on a remote retreat. The husband fondly recalls his wife’s eccentric habit of asking if he would still love her if she were a grotesque insect. During a hike, they encounter a strange, still spring where the wife swims, immediately exhibiting dramatically altered behavior and mysteriously losing her cherished protective rosary. Later, a hideous, weeping creature attacks their cabin, and the wife undergoes a horrifying physical disintegration. It is then revealed that the creature is the real wife, whose soul had been trapped when the woman he knew was taken over by an external entity in the spring. In the end, the narrator accepts the monster as his true love, affirming his answer to the unsettling hypothetical question from earlier.
