Chicago may be calling Karli, but Jake is a dedicated hometown boy and is staying put. Will Karli listen to her heart, or will she choose a dateline over her favorite date? A Smart Romance
This story has all the heart-tugging relational tension but with a sophistication that raises it above the romance genre. The behind-the-scenes look at newsroom life was an interesting setting for Karli and Jake's relationship to develop. Their passion for their work and their sense of social responsibility make both characters admirable. Additionally, the side stories were thought provoking. For instance, beside the obvious romance, there's the realization of the responsibility city planners have for the safety of their citizens. Also, Jake's grief scene, in which sweat substitutes for tears, was intensely effective and haunting. The ending of this story was very satisfying (I expect a happy ending when I invest in a romance novel!) It's hard not to cheer for Karli as she comes full circle from a disgruntled woman with a desire to make it "big" while resisting her dad's influence, to a woman who has learned exactly what she's all about, and what she's all about is oh-so-good! In the final scene....you'll wish you were having a drink with the girls celebrating their new loves!
Smart, sensitive, real, and romantic
I always love finding out what really goes on behind the scenes. I thought that the inside information about how newsrooms work was fascinating, so one nice surprise about this book is that I learned something too.
That was the yummy frosting on a cake that would have been delicious even without it. This was a big step up from a typical romance novel (although the... requisite scenes are wonderfully done). It was smart, sensitive, and real. Life can be messy and difficult (one reason that broadcast news was such a successful backdrop for the story) as well as joyful; all that was reflected in this novel in a way that really made me believe in the characters and care about them.
Highly recommended!

This book was highly recommended by a friend, and I'm so glad I read it! Being a lifelong Midwesterner, I was delighted with the setting of Iowa and the true-to-life characters living their lives in the Heartland. This is an intelligent and emotional story of a small group of newsroom colleagues doing what they do best as they bring an outsider into their fold. Karli and Jake embark on a journey -- professional, then personal -- that made me laugh and cry and left me wanting more.
