#MeToo warning - this is an emotional piece, lessons from the School of Hard Knocks, offered with love, as an educator and as a survivor.
"Violet: Have you ever heard the expression, prevention is nine tenths the cure? Well in the case of suicide, it's ten tenths the cure." -Damsels in Distress, 2011
Humans are not genetically all equally monogamous. Sixty percent of people roughly have multiple copies of a gene involved in the release of the hormone vasopressin in men and oxytocin in women. Vasopressin and oxytocin give us comforting, loving feelings, and strengthens the bond of the relationship whether it is an intimate partner, or a family member or friend. People with the multiple copies of the gene tend to take longer to establish an intimate relationship but then there are unlikely to leave it because they get an increased release of vasopressin or oxytocin when thinking about or being with their loved one. The roughly forty percent of people with only one or a few copies of the gene do not need a long getting to know you time period - if they like you, they like you right away and will get a nice release of bonding hormones right away - but wouldn't reach a larger release with a longer getting to know you time period.
This episode is extemporaneous - spoken without a script, and the sound quality is scratchy, and I have a cold, but it is emotional, and there is value in sharing the original emotion. It is also political - we are killing the planet as a species and that will take us down too. The monogamous gene difference is also associated with sabotage of people who seem different than you or your partner. Sabotage is cheating - I would rather have a partner who may love someone else occasionally than a partner willing to sabotage strangers to help another stranger who seems somewhat familiar. As a species we are sabotaging the planet and all of its species as well as increasing risk of the extinction of our own species. Obsessive-compulsiveness is not a good look for a species or its planet, nor is sabotage for the sake of making more money, gaining territory, or protecting oil fields.
