Love That Overcomes Envy | Jonathan Edwards

Deep Dive into Charity and Its Fruits by Jonathan Edwards - The Spirit of Charity the Opposite of an Envious Spirit

Jonathan Edwards, in his discourse on 1 Corinthians 13:4, asserts that true Christian charity is the absolute opposite of an envious spirit. He defines envy as a deep dissatisfaction with and opposition to the happiness and prosperity of others. Stemming from a natural human desire to be superior, envy makes individuals resentful when they perceive others as having more honor, wealth, or success. This toxic disposition manifests in two main ways: an intense uneasiness at the sight of another's prosperity, and a personal dislike or hatred toward the prosperous individual, which often leads to evil speaking or scheming to bring them down.

Conversely, a Christian spirit of charity actively rejects and mortifies envious inclinations within the heart. Instead of resenting the success of others, a charitable person remains content with the station God has assigned to them and genuinely rejoices in their neighbor's prosperity. Edwards argues that the teachings of the New Testament consistently condemn envy as a destructive work of the flesh and instead emphasize goodwill and meekness.

Furthermore, the entire gospel narrative contradicts the spirit of envy. God freely gave His only Son, and Christ voluntarily embraced a life of poverty without envying the worldly wealthy or begrudging his disciples any blessings. In contrast, envy is characterized as the spirit of the devil, who sought humanity's ruin in Eden out of sheer malice.

Ultimately, Christian love cultivates humility, which destroys pride, the very root of envy. Edwards concludes by urging strict self-examination, warning that envy is not only spiritually dangerous but also a foolish form of self-injury. He describes it as a rotting cancer that destroys personal peace and prevents individuals from enjoying their own God-given blessings.
