The Messiah's Mission
Part 2: Loving the Truth
By Louie Marsh, 12-17-2023
Introduction: Last slide – to solve human equation
9 The true light, which gives light to everyone , was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. John 1:9-11 (ESV)
1) I came….to Divide.
1st: PRINCIPLE – Truth always DIVIDES
34 "Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person's enemies will be those of his own household.
37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Matthew 10:34-39 (ESV)
49 "I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! 50 I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! 51 Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. Luke 12:49-51 (ESV)
Sounds bad but it's good – the truth always divides.
Examples – The Flat Earth Society, Did men really walk on the moon? Did the CIA invent AIDS? Racial or tribal superiority. KJV only.
2ND PRINCPLE – To know the truth I must SEPARATE it from error.
17 In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. 18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God's approval. 1 Corinthians 11:17-19 (NIV)
"15Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15, ESV)
"21but test everything; hold fast what is good. 22Abstain from every form of evil." (1 Thessalonians 5:21–22, ESV)
1ST APPLICATION – I must be sure I'm on the side of the TRUTH
39 Jesus said, "For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind." John 9:39 (ESV)
· I must deeply LOVE the truth.
"6Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6, ESV)
"10and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved." (2 Thessalonians 2:10, ESV)
2ND APPLICATION – I must deal truthfully with those who err by…
· LOVING them like Jesus does.
21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." Mark 10:21 (ESV)
· BEFRIENDING them as Jesus did.
19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds." Matthew 11:19 (ESV)
· SHARING the truth with them as wisely as possible.
2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 2 Timothy 4:2 (ESV)
"11But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned."… "14But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, "If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?"" (Galatians 2:11,14, ESV)
