Lower Extremity Amputation and Crisis amongst Hispanics

Listen Later

Statistics suggest that the Hispanic community is 60% more prone to catching diabetes when compared to the general populace. Join us for today’s episode as Dr. Kumar and Dr. Alvarez, two experienced clinicians, share their expertise on how amputation and other dangerous complications can be avoided if you are a diabetic or have the symptoms of diabetes as a Hispanic.
Key points from today's episode are:
1. Plaque build-up in the small arteries of the feet and hands leads to lack of blood circulation which starves the tissues of oxygen and eventually leads to amputation.
2. Pain in the lower extremities while walking is known as claudication. Early diagnosis can eliminate further complications by reducing claudication, preventing ulcers, increasing blood circulation, and ultimately warding off any chances of amputation.
3. There are multiple factors behind why certain communities have a higher percentage of diabetes and other conditions. The most prevalent are obesity, genetics, unhealthy diet, and inactive lifestyle.
4. Undocumented residency, hesitancy towards treatment, and expensive healthcare are the major reasons why ethnic communities avoid visiting doctors until the condition is barely treatable. Visit a healthcare provider before it’s too late.
5. Developing a foot sore is like a death sentence for diabetics. If you feel something’s wrong in the feet, you should immediately visit a physician.
