It was Christmas Eve, 1971. 17-year-old Juliane Koepcke and her mother, Maria Koepcke, excitedly boarded LANSA Flight 508. They were flying from the city of Lima, Peru, to spend Christmas with Juliane’s father in Panguana, a biological research centre in the rainforest where the family lived.
