Jesus’ response to the accusation by the Pharisees that he’s not ceremonially clean because he did not wash his hands prior to eating at the table was that Jesus condemns this extra-biblical practice by the Pharisees by calling their attention to their lack of concern for inward sin by pronouncing “woes” of hypocrisy evident among the Pharisees and the scribes which results in the beginnings of a plot to kill Jesus.
