The final woman who is listed in the genealogy of Matthew 1 is Mary. Mary had received an amazing promise that the Messiah was conceived in her womb. The song she sang spoke about the way that God had favored her. Favor, or grace, comes to all those whom God has chosen. God lifts up the lowly and he humbles the proud, which is something we need to remember when we are distressed, either from our lowly circumstances or from proud rulers that we can’t trust in. In his incarnation, Jesus came of low estate to bring those of us who are spiritually poor into salvation. This is a richness beyond what we can ever ask or imagine.
