② The more widely the habit of reading spreads, and the more the people listen to the same language used over the radio and in the movies, the less variation there will be in the speech of those speaking the same language. With these strong influences working to make language uniform, it will be but natural for language to become more stable in time as well as in space. In other words, changes in a language will come more slowly.
