"His work wasn't all murder and mayhem. He had a sense of humor, and he also captured everyday life of New Yorkers, from children sleeping on fire escapes to crowds at Coney Island. His style, though, was distinctive. Sort of gritty, black and white images, high contrast and a sense of immediacy, he said he liked to embrace both chaos and unpredictability in the streets, but show both beauty and ugliness.
