Lutheran Hymnal: 057 - A Lamb Goes Uncomplaining Forth

Listen Later

Part I
1
A Lamb goes uncomplaining forth
The guilt of all men bearing;
‘Tis laden with the sins of earth,
None else the burden sharing.
It goes its way, grows weak and faint,
To slaughter led without complaint,
Its spotless life to offer;
Bears shame, and stripes, and wounds, and death,
Anguish, and mockery, and saith:
All this I gladly suffer.
2
This Lamb is Christ, the soul’s great friend,
The Lamb of God, our Saviour;
Him God the Father chose to send,
To gain for us His favour.
He bids His Son go forth to share
The lot of children doomed to bear
His wrath and condemnation;
Though great the punishment, and dread,
God wills that He His blood shall shed
To purchase man’s salvation.
3
Behold, the Lamb most willingly
Endures what God commanded,
His will conforms to God’s decree,
To do as God demanded.
O wondrous love, what hast Thou done!
The Father offers up His Son,
The Son content descendeth;
O love, O love, how strong art Thou!
In shroud and grave He lieth now
Whose word the mountains rendeth.
4
Lord, all my life I’ll cleave to Thee,
Thy love for e’er beholding,
Thee ever, as Thou ever me,
With loving arms enfolding.
And when my heart grows cold in death,
Thy love I’ll praise with my last breath,
Thine image still before me.
Henceforth myself and all that’s mine
I yield to Thee, my Lord, as Thine,
Who art my hope and glory.
Part II
5
From morn till eve my song shall be,
O Lord, Thy wondrous favour;
To sacrifice myself to Thee
Shall be my one endeavour.
My stream of life shall flow for Thee,
A constant current, ceaselessly
Its praise to Thee outpouring;
And all that Thou hast done for me
I’ll treasure in my memory,
Thine endless love adoring.
6
When I at last Thy kingdom see,
And taste its joy and pleasure,
Thy blood my royal robe shall be,
My glory and my treasure.
Before the heavenly Father’s throne
This then shall be the shining crown
With which Thou wilt provide me;
And there, by Him to Thee betrothed,
Shall I in wedding garments clothed
Stand as Thine own beside Thee.
