Being chosen Miss America 2009 was a dream come true for Katie, who had been interested in everything Miss America since childhood. … As a lifelong member of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, Katie’s faith was grounded through attending Sunday School, Lutheran elementary school, and worship services.

A verse from Dorothy Degnitz’s confirmation days that came to mind when she asked God for advice on where to work after graduating from nursing school was “Here am I! Send me” (Isaiah 6:8). Inspired by a missionary nurse’s presentation, she said “Yes!” to working in the LCMS mission field. In 1966 her first assignment was to Immanuel Lutheran Hospital in Eket, Nigeria.

Devotion on Struggles and Challenges.

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

There are few guarantees in life — few things of which we can be absolutely sure. … Jesus speaks the words of John 16:33 between the institution of the Lord’s Supper and His betrayal and arrest. He promises there are two guarantees in life: tribulation and peace.

For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him (Psalm 103:11).

YOU are priceless and precious. But maybe you don’t think of yourself that way … Do not despair, my friend! There is hope!  … God loves you with a perfect love.
