Lydia de Vega: Asia's Fastest Woman

Listen Later

The OSLP podcast mourns the loss of Lydia de Vega OLY. As Asia's fastest woman in the 80s, she was an inspiration to a generation of Filipinos. She won golds for sprinting in the SEA Games, the Asian Games, and the Asian Athletics Championships. She joined two Summer Olympic Games and advanced to the quarterfinals. Her sprinting records in the Philippines and Southeast Asia lasted around 32 years each on average. She retired from competition and started coaching and a family. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in 2018. Her legacy lives on. Let's remember Lydia de Vega, athlete, mother, and inspiration.
