A move towards more monitoring of dementia units is being welcomed by Grey Power.

The Office of the Ombudsman will soon monitor how dementia patients are treated in aged care facilities.

But Grey Power president Mac Welch told Mike Hosking a shake up of the monitoring of dementia units doesn't go far enough.

He says there is a need for this type of care to be supervised and the organisation wants the appointment of an Aged Care Commissioner.

Welch says many care facilities are very well run.

"But there are the areas where that is not happening and it certainly needs to be audited, it needs to be supervised closely, much more closely than it currently is."
