Tales from Shakespeare was originally written in 1807 by Charles Lamb and his sister, Mary, as more comprehensible (and enjoyable) versions of the original Shakespearian texts, specifically but not exclusively for children. The original preface to Lamb's work notes that Shakespeare's words "are used whenever it seemed possible to bring them in; and in whatever has been added to give them the regular form of a connected story, diligent care has been taken to select such words as might least interrupt the effect of the beautiful English tongue in which he wrote: therefore, words introduced into our language since his time have been as far as possible avoided." Two hundred years later, Lamb's writings continue to delight and educate.
Members Reviews:
A classic story presented in an easy to understand way - excellent!
Before reading this book my outstanding memory of Macbeth was having been given it as my first book to read for my English Literature classes at school many moons ago. I can remember my mum and I having a nightmare time trying to understand all the old English words - how I wish this eBook had been available then.
For those who wish (or have to) read the classics this little book is a must. It has plenty of the original quotes by Shakespeare but around them the story is written in straight forward, easy to understand English.
I can honestly say that I would have had a lot happier time reading this aged 14 than the daunting original. Well done to Phillip J. Mather, the author for presenting a classic story in a easy to read way.
