Publisher's Summary:
Sarah Hall is an exquisite chronicler of landscapes - rural, industrial, psychological - and these haunting stories reveal a writer at the peak of her powers. Rich in the mythic symbolism of wilderness and wasteland, these tales blur the natural and urban, mundane and surreal, human and animal.
Written in Hall's lyrical prose, this uncannily disturbing collection glitters with poetic and erotic imagery. Marked by a fascination with the intimacy of nature - and the nature of intimacy - Madame Zero is a stunning new collection from an author twice nominated for the Booker Prize.
Members Reviews:
a strange, thoughtful, and wonderfully written collection
!!! warning: a couple of stories in this work, specifically case study 2, later his ghost, and evie have implied rape/csa or are sexually violent, and theatre 6 is a gorey depiction of failed pregnancy.

i really enjoyed this. if you've ever read hall's previous short story collection, 'the beautiful indifference', a lot of the work presented in 'madame zero' feels a lot like the last story, 'vuotjärvi'--kind of haunting and foreboding. it's not quite as sexual and erotic as her previous collection (except that last story, which was...whew!). more of the stories here are varied in subject; where 'the beautiful indifference' revolved around the loneliness in mostly women's love lives, 'madame zero' only has two stories that use that as the focus.
obviously, hall's writing is great. it isn't very different from the way she usually writes and she's one of the few writers that have such a wonderful and fluid style.
i'd say that a lot of the stories in 'madame zero' are unsettling and strange. i don't want to give away too much, but a lot of the stories seem to be observations or speculations on the human condition (questions about what makes us human, how we endure or adapt in the face of adversity, how we acknowledge or react to death). which is great! because i have always had a lot of difficulty reading hall's full-length novels (her writing is amazing, but the stories aren't very eventful). there were two stories featured that i didn't understand (theatre no. 6 and wilderness, the latter was just...insufferable to say the least), which is to be expected as this collection seems to be more experiential than a lot of hall's previous work, but the other stories were wonderful and memorable. i'd recommend it to anyone who is looking to read something different!
"Hallâs stories are dark and strange, sensual and finely worded, literary without being pretentious."
MADAME ZERO, a collection of nine short stories, is the latest from Man Booker Prize-nominated author Sarah Hall. The slenderness of the physical book belies its emotional heft and the vastly compelling world it contains. Hall masterfully controls the emotions of her characters in these stories, verging on surreal. The book is framed by two tales of transformation and filled with stories of realization and tribulation.
âMrs. Foxâ opens MADAME ZERO. Sophia, a previously unremarkable wife, inexplicably turns into a vixen and raises a litter of kits in the forest near where she lived with her husband.
