Mahmoud Amin Suleiman: Egypt's Master Thief and Slayer

Listen Later

Mahmoud Amin Suleiman, infamously known as “The Butcher of the Intellectuals,” was an Egyptian criminal whose life later inspired Naguib Mahfouz’s novel The Thief and the Dogs. Born into a well-off family, his criminal instincts surfaced at an early age, beginning with petty thefts in childhood before evolving into elaborate burglaries targeting Egypt’s wealthy and famous. His method relied on infiltrating high society circles, earning trust, and gathering valuable intelligence to meticulously plan his crimes. After a string of successful heists, he was eventually captured—but managed a daring prison escape, marking the start of a far more violent chapter in his life. Driven by jealousy and a burning desire for revenge against his wife, Nawa, Suleiman embarked on a bloody rampage that made him one of Egypt’s most wanted men. His story ended in a fierce shootout with police, where he was killed. Brilliant yet unhinged, Suleiman’s life reflected a deep rejection of social norms and a dangerous blend of cunning and madness.
