Crossing Barriers
Famous detective loses young charge on ocean liner - seeks same in New York! You might swear this couldn't work because of linguistic and cultural barriers, and that Maigret must come on as a kind of Charlie Chan. But the story is reasonably convincing - despite some puzzlement about who the American "Federal Police" might be and why leading New York police officials are able to speak such fluent French. The harshness of immigrant experience in America is a theme and high prices in the Big Apple are commented on - although not those in the city's French restaurants! (I wonder that a Fourth Republic retired civil servant could afford them at all - or without protest, anyhow.) Presumably the action takes place after World War II, but the ambiance is timeless film noir. If you admire Simenon for his narrative skill, you'll probably like this.

I ordered this thinking it was an English translation. It's not, it's in French! It would be nice if the product information made that clear.
Classic Maigret
I am a long-time fan of Inspector Maigret, having read all of his advetures that I was able to get my hands on. I lived in France in the 1950s but over the years have lost most of my French language skills. I despaired of ever picking them back up until I remembered the deft, spare style of Georges Simenon. Not only am I enjoying the truly delectible story of Maigret in America, I am quickly relearning my lost skills. Kudos to you for making the French-language editions of popular fiction available!
