Step outside right now and you'll feel it. That damp, clinging fog that wraps around you like a wet blanket. Classic early March — winter's still hanging on, but spring is knocking hard.

Here's the situation. A Winter Weather Advisory runs until 1 P.M. Across northern and central Maine. Freezing rain and drizzle are glazing over untreated roads from The County down through Bangor. Caribou's taking the worst of it — south winds at 17 miles an hour whipping that freezing rain sideways. Ice accumulations up to a tenth of an inch. If you're driving north of Waterville this morning, give yourself extra time. Those roads are slicker than a hockey rink.

By mid-morning, the freezing rain switches to plain rain as temperatures climb. Portland and the coast hit 45 degrees this afternoon — five degrees above normal. That's t-shirt weather if you're standing in the sun. Augusta reaches 41. Bangor climbs to 45. Even The County manages 44, though with those winds still gusting, it'll feel cooler.

Tonight, steady rain moves in. Downeast and the Midcoast see it as early as 10 P.M. The weird part? Lows are rising. Portland starts at 41 tonight. Then climbs to 47 by sunrise. It's like the weather can't decide if she's tucking us in or turning up the thermostat.

Sunday brings the real warmth. Highs surge into the 50s statewide — 53 in Portland, 55 in Augusta, 56 in Bangor. That's near record territory for early March.

Here's your heads-up for the week. Monday and Tuesday stay warm — upper 50s to low 60s. Then Wednesday, a cold front crashes the party. Rain changes to snow inland. The Western Mountains could see several inches. Thursday stays cold, mid-30s to low 40s. Friday finishes frosty — upper 20s in The County with light snow possible.
