In this five part series – Mainstreaming Enlightenment – we discuss a few moments when popular culture took something from the ancient human experience of Enlightenment. More broadly, we discuss consumerism, profiteering, branding and advertising, all in relation to Enlightenment and its related concepts. There is a deep truth to the experience of Enlightenment and that truth is distorted by mainstream culture, which to those that know, can be amusing. As cultural juxtapositions and contradictions become clear, one can find messages within them that lead beyond the tasteless surface level meanings and back towards the profound.
