Maja Smrekar was born in Slovenia. She graduated at the Sculpture Department of Fine Art and Design Academy in collaboration with the Academy in Ljubljana, she holds a Master of Arts in Video and New Media.
Her work has been established as an international reference for art and science successful projects, she has worked with molecular biologists and diverse scientists to create artworks that make us rethink our position as humans and relationships with other species. In 2017 she received the Golden Nica award at the Ars Electronica Festival for her K-9_topology series. In this opus, which consists of four projects ('Ecce Canis', 'I Hunt Nature and Culture Hunts Me', 'Hybrid Family', and 'ARTE_mis') she addressed the topics of parallel evolution of human and dog
