After high school, he attended the University of Texas at El Paso and graduated in December 2005 with his Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and a Minor in Military Science. In the same month, he received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant with the United States Army National Guard. After graduation and commissioning, he reported to Army flight school and graduated in October of 2007 as an Army Aviator. While attending flight school, he applied for the United States Border Patrol, entered on duty in December 2007, and was named class leader. He was the recipient of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center Director’s award upon graduation with the United States Border Patrol Academy class #729. Rudy has been deployed many times in support of combat, humanitarian, and counter-drug operations to locations such as Afghanistan, Central and South America, and US-Mexico Southwest Border. During combat operations in Afghanistan, he served as Executive Officer, Task Force O.D.I.N. (Observe, Detect, Identify, and Neutralize) and once as Commander, Task Force C.E.A.S.A.R. (Communications Electronic Attack with Surveillance and Reconnaissance). His military service has allowed him and his family to be assigned to Fort Rucker, Alabama; Fort Hood, Texas; and Fort Bliss, Texas. He is a dual-rated Army Aviator in both Helicopter and Fixed Wing aircraft with ratings in UH-60, OH-58, and C-12 aircraft. He now serves as an Air Interdiction Agent with CBP’s Air and Marine Operations where he’s a pilot in command in the Pilatus PC-12 aircraft and field coordinator for the CBP's Veteran Support Program. He is a recipient of the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Senior Army Aviator Badge, and other recognitions. He and his wife of nearly 17 years have four kiddos, Jakob who is 21, Joshua who is, Julian who is 12, and Jyleen who is 8. Rudy enjoys a good run in the morning, or wherever he can get it, catching a good movie at the theatre, and loves the game of baseball. His greatest achievement is when he sees others whom he’s had a direct influence on succeed.

The mission of The 9:57 Project is to connect Veterans with young people in order to perpetuate Courage, Resilience, Service, Teamwork, and the legacy of Flight 93. At 9:57 AM on 9/11, the passengers and crew of Flight 93 fought back, saving the U.S. Capitol Building and preventing further loss of life. Their actions were the first successful counterattack in the War on Terror. Our Veterans share the "Spirit of 9:57" with young people in order to perpetuate this legacy and the leadership traits exhibited on board the plane that day. Those values are the ones young people need to thrive and succeed in today's world.
