  • 3 ways to improve your poker confidence

Improving your confidence in poker requires a top-down approach, starting from finding and sticking to solid preflop strategies because they affect all your decisions in future streets. There is also NO substitute from studying poker hands away from the table, such as studying hands with programs like Flopzilla and PIO Solver. But if you have limited time to study poker, then this podcast episode is going to be perfect for you.

Here are the topics we will cover:

    • Updates for my poker cash game results for May 2021
    • My life updates for June 2021 and the upcoming Fall
    • How to improve your preflop confidence by finding and following reliable preflop charts that are well-researched, and not going with what your friends or peers tell you
    • How to improve your postflop confidence by understanding why you are betting or checking
    • Making reads on players by paying attention
    • 2 quick hand histories for how I apply everything I talked about during this episode
    • If you want additional resources to help you improve your game, be sure to check out the online courses and programs I use for crushing mid stakes poker.

    • Managing your poker bankroll

Managing bankroll in poker is similar to managing cash flow in a business. You need to be able to manage the downswings in order to reap the rewards.

For a $2/$5 No-Limit cash game, the maximum buy-ins are typically between $500 to $1,000. Being down 4-10 buy-ins is very typical, even if you're playing your best poker. This is why I need to set aside $10,000 to $20,000 for my poker bankroll.

In this episode, I'll go deeper into factors to consider, such as aggression levels, your estimated win rates, and sample size for evaluating your results.

Here are the topics we will cover:

      • How to evaluate aggression levels for the games you're playing at
      • Why short-term win rates can be very misleading
      • Sample size you need in order to get a somewhat accurate picture of your abilities
      • Key hands that show how your mindset towards risk can affect your decision making

      • Learning from your mistakes

In this episode, it's all about learning from your mistakes.

I was traveling from Jacksonville to Tampa, Florida to teach people how to become TEDx speakers (local version of TED talks). I was sharing my idea about the 3 principles for becoming a successful poker player and how we can apply this in real life.

        1. I understand what I can control and what I cannot control
        2. Quality of my actions determine the quality of my results
        3. I see the world for how it actually is
        4. Let's see how we can apply this to the hands we played where we are NOT happy with the results.

Here are the topics we will cover:

          • Updates on my life
          • Why I started this podcast
          • Shoutout to my fans
          • Overall experience with Seminole Hard Rock Tampa $2/$5 games
          • Key hands from Sunday’s session

          • How to study and practice poker efficiently

In this episode, you will learn from my special interview with Alvin Lau, a fellow professional poker player and poker coach on how to study and practice poker efficiently.

Alvin is the creator for poker online courses Overnight Monster and the Bluffing Barbarian. He has helped hundreds of students become big winners in both online and live cash games.

Here are the topics we will cover:

            • Why studying and implementing game-theory optimal (GTO) strategies are necessary to become the biggest winner in your game
            • How some specific betting strategies are superior not just because of its expected value (EV), but because of how people play against your chosen strategies
            • How to focus your studies based on situations that come up the most, such as Button vs Small Blind
            • How to practice poker based on "formations" by grouping similar board textures (i.e. monotone boards, paired boards, etc.)
            • If you want additional resources to help you improve your game, be sure to check out the online courses and programs I use for crushing mid stakes poker.

            • How to profile your opponents

When I mention I play poker to my friends, some of them often ask me, "Does this mean you need to focus on their body language and tells?"

Even though these are factors to consider in a close decision during a poker hand, there are more valuable factors to look for.

I typically look at how much they buy in, how they dress, and how they carry themselves overall - such as how they handle conflicts or bad beats.

You can make preflop adjustments after you have reasonable assumptions for the opponents you play against.

After that, I will teach you what to take notes on throughout your session.

Finally, I will go over 1 interesting hand I played from last month in April 2021 - what I did right and what I did wrong.

            • Choosing the best games to play

How do you choose the best games to play after you showed up to the casino? When might you decide to walk away to switch casinos? Or not play at all?

In this episode, I will cover the following topics:

              • How I decided to go play at Bestbet Orange Park instead
              • How I signed up for both $2/$5 and $5/$10
              • Why did I think the $5/$10 game was very attractive
              • Interesting hands
              • As you may have heard from other poker coaches, you can be the WORST player at the table if you play against 7 other regs (players who you know play for profit and play solid overall). You can be the BEST player if you play against 7 other amateurs or recreational players.

You should be able to identify where your edge is every time you play, ideally within the first 30 minutes of a poker session.

How do you typically review your poker sessions? Do you typically just look at wins and losses? What can you do to make your poker review sessions more useful?

Since this is the first episode, I will cover the following topics:

                • Why mid stakes poker?
                • My overall approach to the game
                • My results for April 2021 and my evaluation
                • Reviewing my session from 4/21/2021
                • What to expect from upcoming episodes
                • The 5-step process I use to review my poker session is as follows:

                  1. What happened during the session? Give a drama free synopsis of your session.
                  2. What went well?
                  3. Did I achieve my pre-session goals?
                  4. What roadblocks did I encounter?
                  5. What can you do to address those roadblocks in the future?
