Through its field of intervention dedicated to the implementation of ICT solutions in its partner municipalities, called"Smart Communities", PRADEC has supported the creation of 2 “Makerspaces” in the Multimedia Center of the Commune of Garoua 2 and the Techhub, Activspaces of Douala. They are each equipped with small machines such as a 3D Print, 01 laser cutting, 01 CNC machine, 01 Vinyl cutting, complete Adruino Kits, Raspberry Pi + corresponding robot kit and 01 digital embroiderer (only in Garoua). In its second phase, which started in September 2020, PRADEC plans to support the implementation of 04 similar mini Makerspaces in the municipalities of the North and the Littoral. The aim was to stimulate creative and innovative collaborative approaches for local crafts people, electronic thinkers, young thinkers, and the community members in general to design, model and prototype objects that meet the ecological, social, and economic needs of their locality. Considering the concentration of such collaborative spaces in urban areas strengthening the rural-urban collaboration is one of key element to foster the success of this initiative.

The experimental phase of the implementation of the mini MakerSpaces confirmed the great interest of young people in the maker movement, but also showed a low level of digital skills both at the level of potential users and at the level of the managers of these spaces, in particular the installation and handling of equipment, small maintenance operations, mastery of modeling software, the efficient management of a MakerSpaces, the organization and animation of information and training programs, etc. Also, the context of the global COVID pandemic has made clear the importance to have local response to face or attenuate effects of problems affecting local population.

Building on ODC's experience in makerspace management and FabLab as well as related initiatives, the collaboration with GIZ presented an opportunity for capacity building of mini-makerspace managers supported by PRADEC to effectively contribute to the achievement of the objective of stimulating creative, collaborative and innovative approaches of young students and artisans in rural areas. The first phase of this capacity building just ended, where the the managers of the makerspaces mentioned above were trained for a period of 2 weeks.
