She Talk Wha?

Making strides: Women, running, and endurance sports

Listen Later

In 1967, Kathrine Virginia Switzer became the first woman to run the Boston Marathon as an officially registered competitor, having entered under her initials to hide her name. During her run, the race manager tried to grab her bib number to remove her from official competition, but Switzer endured. Much has changed in women's running since then.
Host Jane Kloeckner welcomes ultra-marathon runner Theresa Reyes-Cummings and trail runner Kim Olson to talk about women, running and endurance sports. And Julie Bennett Hume leads a discussion on two books featuring women and endurance sports, "Second Wind: One Woman's Midlife Quest to Run Seven Marathons on Seven Continents" and "Grandma Gatewood's Walk: The Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail," sharing how they inspired her.
She Talk Wha? is a weekly Chautauqua, a historic movement for adult education and cultural enrichment, that focuses on local, state, national and global issues facing women in today’s political and cultural climate. We’ll discuss books, ideas, current legislation and executive actions, local and national activism and the different challenges women are dealing with in today’s society.
