Charlie, like a lot of young actors post-pandemic, struggled with finding the funds to get new publicity photos so decided that he would create his own photography company on his own terms. Charlie explains how a small seed of an idea blossomed into a thriving community and shares the refreshing ethos behind Akta Photography. We discuss the crucial role of failure in the journey to success and the importance of collaboration and mindset and we pinpoint elements needed to create a really successful headshot.

ABOUT THE GUEST

At 25, in the middle of lockdown, Charlie Frances set up a Pay What You Can Headshots Company so young actors can hurdle industry barriers to being considered for work.

Charlie, like most trained actors, lost his income at the beginning of the lockdowns. He had been juggling acting gigs around an internship for a Film Festival and work in events. Everyone he knew was in the same boat, their income just disappeared overnight. So, Charlie decided to help his friends be ready for when the industry started up again by taking their headshots at whatever price they could afford; The Pay What You Can Headshots Initiative was born.

Now two years on and the acting industry is slowly picking up, Charlie’s business Akta Photography Ltd has taken over 2000 portraits, produced Podcasts, run workshops, and bundled pertinent services into a subscription service called TeamAkta. Charlie has a successful, growing business built on business acumen alongside the belief everyone should get a fair chance. Charlie continues helping actors keep abreast of industry expectations and dedicates 25% of Headshots to the Akta Pay What You Can Headshot Initiative.

PODCAST DESCRIPTION

This is a podcast series about discovery, understanding, revelation, and stories.

How we perceive the world is rooted in everything that has influenced us throughout our lives, emotionally and psychologically. We become the sum of our parts and each of us has our own unique view of the world. 'Vision' truly is an act of interpretation.

In this podcast series through fascinating conversations, I set about trying to understand how we form our perceptions, view different perspectives, and examine how perception has influenced, inspired, or hindered the lives of each of my unique guests.
