When it comes to making decisions, transparency is your friend. You want to increase your awareness, your knowledge, your understanding and to do this, it requires you to carefully think through what’s going on.
The first step here is to try and capture the context surrounding your decision as a question.
Spend 5-10 minutes asking yourself:
- What’s the overall question you’re trying to answer?
- Who and what might be affected by your decision?
- Whether it is truly yours to make and if you are free to make it your own way?
- What exactly are you deciding on, by when, and what you are not?
- What are the factors affecting your decision and how important are they to you?
- How do the factors interact or conflict?
This visibility alone is a huge first step in helping you to make a better decision because it greatly heightens your awareness.
