Ashely, do you typically start with a sketch when you are creating a new design or do yiu jumps right into the clay?
I start with a sketch. So usually I will draw a 3D form of what I am trying to make. And then I will try to imagine it flat and I will trace out what I think that image would look like flat, cut it out, and then I make a rough version of what it would look like.
Caleb, do you always have a new design you want to work through?
Typically I find a design that I enjoy doing and I do it until I am sick of it. Sometimes the first one o did was the best. And then other times I do it the times and find what I wanted.
Caleb you said you felt the work was a process of sending each other love notes. Ashley, did you ever feel that when you are making a piece, Oh, Caleb is going to love this. ?
Yeah, definitely. I mean I always try to think about how the form could receive an image. And it funny, a lot of times when you are making for someone else to design, I hope they like it, I hope that it is something that is good for them.
Caleb do you ever find yourself wanting to be a director and say, Can you make this shape?
Usually if I follow her lead it ends up better for me, so I kinda just do that. And as far as wanting that, any type of new shape I have been trying to throw stuff in the wheel and I can get cup shapes that are thrown.
What is your favorite shape to work on? Ashley what is your favorite shape to make and why?
And Caleb what is your factor shape to decorate and why?
Ashley:
I really, really like making the trifold cups. I think they are just so fun to make and everyone in a little bit different, even if I use the same template.
Caleb: I would say that that is my favorite thing to work on. Those and we were making a bit bigger mugs, that’s just the size they ended up being. I do think the little triangular cups are fun to work on.
