Male Gaze Me w/ Daniel Honey Ep. 8 of Carrie On My Wayward Son

Listen Later

We start off with time traveling serial killers, self love, and the horrors of Universal Studio rides that spit on you.

Then we get into Carrie 1952 with our Blueberry Ratings, and our initial thoughts on the film. Daniel loves a 1950’s rendition of an 1890’s “Mean Woman” and he'll tell you why !

Lawrence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, A Street Car Named Desire, and Gone with The Wind. I can’t help but talk about breasts and probably give the wrong history of the history of the bra, while Daniel actually tries *not* to talk about boobs !

We discuss the similarities ( or are they synchronicities??? ) of the Carrie 1952 movie (which was based on a book called : Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser), and Stephen King’s Carrie and the movies that followed.

Surprise! I dislike the male gaze-y point of view of the movie and we get confused by 1890’s society, etiquette and dating. Was Carrie the 1952 movie cursed? What was McCarthysim and how does it relate to the plot of this film? Would it surprise you to learn that the Sister Carrie book & titular character written by Theodore Dreiser was just as controversial as Stephen King’s Carrie? Listen in to find out !

Did I catch an EVP at the 22:54 minute mark ??? You tell me with a 5 star review on Apple Podcast ! We talk more male gaze bullshit as Daniel shares his thoughts on The Notebook, Ryan Gosling and who he would cast instead.

We end with child rearing advice from the 1890’s, possible plays on domesticity, another movie from 2018 called : Sister Carrie, based on Theodore Dreiser’s book, ask : What is love? Discuss a Star is Born, Lady Gaga, red flags, Andy Serkis, Tom Hardy, men, men, men, more Carrie Magic, the mundanity of Mind Magic, and The Power of Three.

Next week we have our blow out bash aka our “Carrie-O-Key” party to close out this 9 part pumpkin-spiced-season-series on the spookiest day of all : Halloween (10/31/21) !

LISTENER DISCRETION ADVISED and TRIGGER WARNING as we talk about suicide!
