The Prophet ﷺ referred to malice being a shaver of religion, meaning that it shaves away a person's deeds until their account is bare. When a person hates someone, it can lead them to attack the other verbally or physically because hatred does not remain settled. It is important that we make every effort to actively remove malice and hatred from our hearts before it consumes our good deeds.
