Managing Expectations in Order to Not Live Disappointed

Listen Later

Disappointment is one of the most frequently experienced emotions, and we're massively underestimating the damage it causes to our progress, our relationships, and our ability to keep showing up.

In this episode, I'm getting real about the gut-punch, chest-tightening kind of disappointment. The kind that shows up when you've been doing all the things, and reality doesn't match what you expected. When your body doesn't respond on your timeline. When someone you care about doesn't show up the way you needed them to. When you realize you've been running toward something that was never actually yours to control.

Drawing from Brené Brown's Atlas of the Heart (a book I've been nerding out on), we're digging into:

  • Why disappointment is really about unexamined, unconscious expectations - and how to catch them before they crash you
  • The difference between examined vs. unexamined expectations (and why one destroys progress while the other builds connection)
  • How "living disappointed" shows up in your training, nutrition, business, and relationships - and why it's slowly killing your dreams
  • Why expressing your expectations is an act of courage that changes everything
  • The reality check questions that help you align expectations with your values and what's actually within your control

This isn't about managing emotions or positive thinking. It's about getting brutally honest about the movies playing in your head, having the courage to communicate what you need, and choosing full engagement over self-protection.

Because cool shit happens when you stop holding back.

Reality Check Questions:

  • What are your actual expectations here?
  • What do you want to happen, and WHY?
  • What will achieving this mean to you?
  • Do you have a movie playing in your head? Get specific about it.
  • Are you setting expectations outside your control or influence?
  • Have you communicated this to anyone involved?
  • Does this align with your values and what's actually true about how progress works?
