Summary

In this episode, we delve into the sound changes (音便変化, onbin henka) found in the Kansai dialect excerpt from Ousama Ranking, focusing on the line 待てと言っているだろうが (mate to itteiru darou ga) and its Kansai equivalent 待てちゅうとるやろが (mate chuutoru yaro ga).

Main Topics

1. First, let’s dive into the transformation of 言っている (itteiru).

  • Verb Transformation: The verb “itteiru” transforms into “teru” in both standard and Kansai dialects.
  • Dialectal Variation: In Kansai dialect, “itte” changes to “yuute” due to U-onbin, a vowel sound shift.
  • Original Manga Usage: The original manga uses the full form “itteiru”.

2. Next, we examine how と言っている (to itteiru) becomes ちゅうとる (chuutoru).

  • Sound Change: The consonant T from “to” and the YU sound from “yuute” combine to create the “chuu” sound.
  • Verb Inflection: The verb “teru” transforms into “toru,” which carries a nuance of blaming or accusing in Osaka/Kyoto.
  • Regional Variation: The nuance of “toru” is more neutral in Kobe and surrounding areas.

3. We also explore the pattern と言っているんだよ (to itteirundayo).

  • Expression Usage: Used to strongly express the speaker’s viewpoint or frustration.
  • Expression Forms: Commonly ~てば (teba), ~つうの (tsuuno), or ~ちゅうねん (chuunen) depending on the region.
  • Grammatical Rules: Attach to plain form verbs and i-adjectives; require だ (da) or や (ya) after nouns or na-adjectives.

4. Another cool sound change we’ll cover is Hatsuonbin, which is like nasalizing sounds. Think of it like when you say ‘Mi’ or ‘Bi’ and they become a ‘ん’ sound, like in ’n’.

  • Nasalization in Japanese: Examples include “iwaserunda” becoming “iwasen nen” and “nanimonoda” becoming “nanimonya”.
  • Nasal Sound Reduction: The “ん” sound can be dropped in words like “annani”, becoming “anai”.

5. Furthermore, we looked at the Noun + もの (mono) / もん (mon) patterns.

  • Verb Transformation: The verb “itteiru” transforms into “teru” in both standard and Kansai dialects.
  • Dialectal Variation: In Kansai dialect, “itte” changes to “yuute” due to U-onbin, a vowel sound shift.
