Christian Prayer:
Evening Prayer for Tuesday of the 2nd week of Lent
God, come to my assistance.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
HYMN
Great Ruler of all space and time,
While silence and darkness reign
And while we thus renew our strength,
O Father, this we ask be done
PSALMODY
Ant. 1 You cannot serve both God and mammon.
Definition of Mammon: Mammon is a term that was used to describe riches, avarice, and worldly gain in Biblical literature. It was personified as a false god in the New Testament. The term is often used to refer to excessive materialism or greed as a negative influence.
Psalm 49
I
Hear this, all you peoples,
My lips will speak words of wisdom.
Why should I fear in evil days
For no man can buy his own ransom,
He knows that wise men and fools must both perish
In his riches, man lacks wisdom:
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
Ant. You cannot serve both God and mammon.
Ant. 2 Store up for yourselves treasure in heaven, says the Lord.
II
This is the lot of those who trust in themselves,
With the morning their outward show vanishes
Then do not fear when a man grows rich,
Though he flattered himself while he lived:
In his riches, man lacks wisdom:
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
Psalm-prayer
You condemned the rich, Lord Jesus, because they have already received their reward, and you proclaimed the poor blessed because the kingdom of heaven is theirs. Teach us to seek for imperishable goods and to have confidence in your blood, poured out as the price of our redemption.
Ant. Store up for yourselves treasure in heaven, says the Lord.
Ant. 3 Adoration and glory belong by right to the Lamb who was slain.
Canticle β Revelation 4:11; 5:9, 10, 12
O Lord our God, you are worthy
For you have created all things;
Worthy are you, O Lord,
For you were slain;
You made of them a kingdom,
Worthy is the Lamb that was slain
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
Ant. Adoration and glory belong by right to the Lamb who was slain.
READING James 2:14, 17, 18b
My brothers, what good is it to profess faith without practicing it? Such faith has no power to save one, has it? So it is with the faith that does nothing in practice. It is thoroughly lifeless. Show me faith without works, and I will show you the faith that underlies my works!
Sacred Silence (indicated by a bell) β a moment to reflect and receive in our hearts the full resonance of the voice of the Holy Spirit and to unite our personal prayer more closely with the word of God and public voice of the Church.
RESPONSORY
To you, O Lord, I make my prayer for mercy;
Heal my soul, for I have sinned against you.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
CANTICLE OF MARY
Ant. You are all brothers, sons of one Father who is in heaven. Do not call anyone on earth your father. Nor must any of you be called a teacher, for your only teacher is Christ.
Luke 1:46-55
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
He has mercy on those who fear him
He has shown the strength of his arm,
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
He has filled the hungry with good things,
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
Ant. You are all brothers, sons of one Father who is in heaven. Do not call anyone on earth your father. Nor must any of you be called a teacher, for your only teacher is Christ.
INTERCESSIONS
Let us praise the Lord Jesus, who, lifted high on the cross, drew all things to himself. With loving hearts let us pray:
Lord, may the mystery of your cross shine on all mankind,
May all who thirst for you, the living water,
Inspire all teachers and artists,
Guide all estranged from you by sin or scandal,
Welcome all our deceased brothers and sisters to your home in heaven,
Our Father who art in heaven,
Concluding Prayer
Guard your Church, we pray, O Lord, in your unceasing mercy,
DISMISSAL
May the Lord bless us,
