Christian Prayer:
Evening Prayer I for the Third Sunday of Lent
God, come to my assistance.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
HYMN
God of mercy God of grace
Deep regret for follies past,
Foolish fears and fond desires,
These, and every secret fault,
PSALMODY
Ant. 1 The Lord says: Turn away from sin and open your hearts to the Gospel.
Psalm 113
Praise, O servants of the Lord,
High above all nations is the Lord,
From the dust he lifts up the lowly,
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
Psalm-prayer
Lord Jesus, Word of God, surrendering the brightness of your glory you became man so that we may be raised from the dust to share your very being. May there be innumerable children of the Church to offer homage to your name from the rising of the sun to its setting.
Ant. The Lord says: Turn away from sin and open your hearts to the Gospel.
Ant. 2 I will offer a sacrifice of praise and call upon the name of the Lord.
Psalm 116:10-19
I trusted, even when I said:
How can I repay the Lord
My vows to the Lord I will fulfill
Your servant, Lord, your servant am I;
My vows to the Lord I will fulfill
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
Psalm-prayer
Father, precious in your sight is the death of the saints, but precious above all is the love with which Christ suffered to redeem us. In this life we will fill up in our own flesh what is still lacking in the sufferings of Christ; accept this as our sacrifice of praise, and we shall even now taste the joy of the new Jerusalem.
Ant. I will offer a sacrifice of praise and call upon the name of the Lord.
Ant. 3 No one takes my life away from me; I lay it down freely and I shall take it up again.
Canticle β Philippians 2:6-11
Though he was in the form of God,
Rather, he emptied himself
He was known to be of human estate,
Because of this,
So that at Jesusβ name
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
Ant. No one takes my life away from me; I lay it down freely and I shall take it up again.
READING 2 Corinthians 6:1-4a
We beg you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says, βIn an acceptable time I have heard you; on a day of salvation I have helped you.β Now is the acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation! We avoid giving anyone offense, so that our ministry may not be blamed. On the contrary, in all that we do we strive to present ourselves as ministers of God.
Sacred Silence (indicated by a bell) β a moment to reflect and receive in our hearts the full resonance of the voice of the Holy Spirit and to unite our personal prayer more closely with the word of God and public voice of the Church.
RESPONSORY
Listen to us, O Lord, and have mercy, for we have sinned against you.
Christ Jesus, hear our humble petitions,
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
CANTICLE OF MARY
Ant. Now that we have been justified by faith, let us be at peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Luke 1:46-55
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
He has mercy on those who fear him
He has shown the strength of his arm,
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
He has filled the hungry with good things,
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
Ant. Now that we have been justified by faith, let us be at peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
INTERCESSIONS
Let us give glory to Christ the Lord, who became our teacher, our example and our brother. Let us pray to him, saying:
Lord Jesus, you became like us in all things but sin; teach us how to share with others their joy and sorrow,
Help us to feed you in feeding the hungry,
You raised Lazarus from the sleep of death,
Through the example of the blessed Virgin Mary and the saints,
Let the dead rise in your glory,
Our Father who art in heaven,
Concluding Prayer
O God,
DISMISSAL
May the Lord bless us,
