“Whoever speaks the truth gives honest evidence, but a false witness utters deceit. There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” — Proverbs 12:17–18 (ESV)

“Then Job answered the Lord and said… ‘I had heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.’” — Job 42:1–6 (ESV)

Have you ever said something you instantly regretted, or heard a rumor that cut deep? Proverbs 12:17–18 reminds us that our words carry power—they can either wound or heal. Words aren’t just sounds; they leave marks on people’s hearts that sometimes last far longer than we expect. Job’s story shows us another kind of power: the ability to endure, reflect, and ultimately be restored. After losing almost everything and wrestling with questions he didn’t have answers for, Job comes face-to-face with God and discovers a deeper understanding of His sovereignty. It’s a journey from pain to perspective, from brokenness to blessing.

For teens navigating friendships, social media, school, and family, it can feel like words are constantly thrown at you—some kind, some cruel. The challenge is choosing wisely how we respond and what we contribute to the conversation. Will you speak rashly like a sword, or will you be someone whose words bring life and healing? And when life feels overwhelming, will you, like Job, trust that God is still at work—even when you don’t understand everything?

THINK ABOUT IT

1. The Power of Words: Think about a time someone’s words either hurt or healed you. How did it affect your mood, your confidence, or your relationships? How can you be intentional with the words you speak this week?

2. Endurance Through Trials: Job lost a lot but eventually saw God’s hand in his restoration. What challenges are you facing right now, and how might God be shaping you through them?

3. Humility and Reflection: Job’s response to God in Job 42:5–6 shows humility and repentance. How can pausing to reflect on your own mistakes or misunderstandings open the door to growth and restoration?

BOTTOM LINE

Your words and your responses have power—choose to speak life and trust God, even when life feels unfair.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of words and the lessons we can learn from them. Help me to speak in ways that bring healing and encouragement, and give me the patience to trust You when life is hard or confusing. Teach me to reflect Your heart, and restore me when I fall short. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
