Matthew 28:18-20
There are two words that whenever you use them, you must use them with care. They are the words “all” and “never.” You see only God knows enough to use these words wisely. You and I often use them unwisely. We say, “Well, this is always like this.” Or “This is never like that.” In His last words in Matthew 28 the Lord Jesus uses a number of these universals. “All authority,” “All nations,” “Teaching them to observe all things,” “Lo, I am with you always.” I like these universals our Lord uses. Let’s think about them. These universals that come from our wonderful King of Kings. All authority.
I’m glad that the Lord Jesus has all authority. The rulers of this world do not have all authority. They are under the sovereignty of God. Those neighbors or those enemies who are making life difficult for you do not have all authority but He does. This takes care of our fearfulness. We don’t have to be afraid because we worship and follow One who has all authority. Now this One tells us to “Go into all nations.” “Go ye therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). You see we are not to be selfish. The Gospel is to be shared. Good news is for telling others. Whenever we have good news about a sale or a bargain, we tell other people. We have wonderful good news about the Lord Jesus Christ saving sinners. Let’s tell everybody.
All authority for us to go to all nations and we should “Teach them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” All of the Word of God, sharing all of the Word of God. Teaching people to obey the Word of God. Not pick and choose. The Word of God is not a cafeteria where you take what you want and leave the rest. All things that I’ve taught you, and then that marvelous assurance, “Lo, I am with you always.” That’s good to know that He has all authority and He is with us always. That means we can go into all nations and not be afraid. And so today while you are going about the work of the Lord and doing your tasks, remember you’re worshiping One who has all authority and Who sends us into all nations and is with us always.
