March 31 - The 1889 Opening of the Eiffel Tower

In 1889, and the French Government wanted to commemorate the 100 years since the French Revolution with an international exposition. As it’s centrepiece, there was a design competition for a grand monument to be built on the Champ-de-Mars in central Paris. It had only just been completed in 1889, and it was already set for demolition in 1909....but the study of weather saved it.
