March Goes Green – The story of the waste reclaimer – Part 1
One of the most controversial and interesting aspects of South African infostructure is waste management. In South Africa many communities are exposed to a group of people known as waste reclaimers. This group of South Africans are responsible for a large portion of the recycling, repurposing and the management of waste in South Africa.
In an attempt to understand these reclaimers and the system they have designed Nick Hamman and the 5 Drive team would like to introduce you to Luyanda Hlatshwayo. He is a former waste reclaimer. He started his waste reclaiming career on the ground physically reclaiming waste. Having left the hospitality industry to become a waste reclaimer, he jokes that since he has started as a waste reclaimer his landlord hasn’t called him in 2 years.
The point of this campaign is to raise awareness, to showcase those behind the balaclava and explain how important to the South African economy and the countries efforts to recycle.
