If an investor wants to buy an asset that seems to be more expensive than the total money that he or she has, the investor can borrow money from a broker and add to the amount in the bank account that enables him to purchase the asset. 

The money in the investor's bank account acts as collateral, while the company which has given the investor the loan, becomes the lender.
