Today is August 31, 2016. Travel back with me to this date in 1990. We’re in Bradenton, Florida, on the back lots of Pirate City, the Pirates’ minor league facility where today we will watch a rookie-league game between the Yankees and the Pirates. There’s no fanfare for these kids; there aren’t even really stands for fans to pack into, but simple metal bleachers. In fact, this game doesn’t really mean anything to anyone except Yankees starting pitcher, 20-year-old Mariano Rivera.
