The stonefruit industry has come out in support of the Ministry for Primary Industries after it ordered to contain or destroy around 48,000 plants imported from the U.S.
An audit in March found a number of significant failures at Washington's Clean Plant Centre, giving MPI no confidence the plants are free of disease.
Summerfruit NZ chief executive Marie Dawkins told Mike Hosking the audit was damning.
"There's evidence that it's not just a lack of reporting, there's evidence of lack of tests and falsification of tests."
MPI will consider claims for the direct cost of lost plants.
