Most people say they believe Jesus is coming back, yet for many that belief changes very little about how they live. We become consumed with temporary things, like travelers distracted by airport shops while forgetting the flight home. In Mark 13, Jesus confronts that drift. He prepares His disciples not only for the destruction of the temple, but for the certainty of His return. As He points to the fig tree budding before summer, He reminds them that His words never fail. The temple they thought was permanent would fall, but His promises would stand. “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” Jesus is not speaking like a mere teacher or prophet. He is declaring that His Word carries the permanence of God Himself. Everything else we build our lives on eventually fades—success, possessions, comfort, even the things we once thought would finally satisfy us. But Christ’s Word will never collapse under the weight of our hopes.
