* Jesus had already fed the 5,000 and the disciples picked up 12 baskets full.
* Then He fed the 4,000 and the disciples picked up 7 baskets full.
* Then they left for another place to minister.
* vs 11-12- The Pharisees wanted further proof - “Show us more and wele believe you!”
* They wanted to draw a logical conclusion, not trust Him in faith.
* True faith doesn’t defy logic, it goes deeper than logic.
* It sees with the eye of the spirit.
* It looks for the spiritual beyond the physical.
* vs 13 - If you only look with your physical eye you’ll forfeit God’s presence.
* vs 14 - They didn’t properly prepare for the trip.
* vs 15 - Jesus tells His disciples to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Herodians (the people who had just asked for a sign).
* vs 16 - The disciples instantly thought He was talking about something physical since they had forgotten bread.
* This physical mindset was the leaven Christ was referring to.
* vs 17 - But Jesus was referring to something spiritual. What was it?
* Leaven is “a pervasive influence that modifies something or transforms it.”
* Jesus was talking about a MINDSET - “don’t let your mind be conformed to the physical!”
* What happens if you do?
* A Leavening Agent is a “substance used in doughs and batters that cause a foaming action (gas bubbles) that lightens and softens the mixture.”
* Seeing with a physical mindset causes you to get 1) puffed up, and 2) soft.
* The Pharisees were hypocrites.
* The Herodians looked to government, not God for security. They loved power and found Herod their savior.
* vs 18-21 - KEY: Christ’s rebuke was to remind them of the leftovers!
* He reminded them of what they got for seeking the spiritual before the physical - for seeking His kingdom first.
* When they served others out of obedience in the spiritual, having no clue how Christ would do it in the natural, they ended up not only being useful to nourish others but also having more than enough nourishment themselves.
* They didn’t need to worry about physical bread - if they focused on doing His thing He would take care of them.
* PRINCIPLE - Seek first God’s kingdom and “all these things” will be added unto you.
* Any time you go through something always search for the spiritual principle first.
* When you do this the physical will take care of itself - you will know what to do.
* But if you only look to the physical you will miss the spiritual.
