We are continuing our sermon series, “Mark My Words,” as we explore the life and ministry of Jesus through the Gospel of Mark. Today’s Scripture has two healing stories wrapped up into one! This is something that happens a lot in the Gospel of Mark, and scholars call it a “Markan Sandwich.” Like pastrami on rye, or peanut butter and jelly, or ham and cheese. These flavors complement each other and enhance each other. The flavor of the inner story adds to the flavor of the outer story – and vice versa. Mark tells the story of a desperate father who asks Jesus to heal his dying daughter – only to have Jesus interrupted by a woman suffering from a chronic condition. In the end, Jesus heals both women. Each story is great on its own but sandwiching them together makes it even more fulfilling. Associated Scripture: Mark 5:21-43
