In this podcast, Beyond Zero radio talks to Mark Ogge, Principal Adviser at The Australia Institute, and was commissioned to advise the NT government enquiry on shale gas fracking.
""To frack or not to frack - is it a no-brainer question?"
The NT presently has a moratorium on fracking so the "scientific" inquiry which has just been reported in Feb. contains new codes of practice with 136 recommendations on 1000 pages. But Mark considers the inquiry has not followed its own terms of reference - the reason being he has doubts about it being "scientific " is the conflict of interest that people from the CSIRO involved were funded by the oil and gas companies with millions of dollars. He said there is an incentive to cut corners, little monitoring of safety precautions and scientists say the process should not go ahead under any circumstances. To add to the above , there would be very few jobs (representing 0.3% of the NT workforce), more chances of methane leaking into the atmosphere - and altogether a much more expensive operation than the employment of renewables. With the myopic vision of the governments there is of course an important concern on the future food and water security with the population projected to approach 9-10 billion.
