The Mike Hosking Breakfast

Mark the Week: Good news for government after one year anniversary

Listen Later

Every Friday morning, Mike Hosking takes you through the big ticket items of the week and lets you know what he makes of it all.
Here's a taste of what he reckons.
E-scooters.
2/10.
"If you ever want a lesson in just how inept our local regulators are, this is it.
E-scooters turn up one night, we all ride them, almost kill each other, infuriate each other, litter the footpath with them, and a week on the regulators go, "hey, hang on what happened there? Can we have a report?
It's embarrassing."
No more Regional Fuel Taxes.
7/10.
"This is good because we hate tax, but what a transparent rort. We never intended  to have more taxes, what?!
Despite telling the councils they could ask, despite14 of them asking, despite the law being changed to allow them to do so, it's not going to happen.
That wasn’t a last minute panic at all, was it?"
Simon Bridges.
3/10.
"The poll said it all.
7 percent as preferred Prime Minister is dog tucker territory."
One Year into New Government.
8/10.
"Yes, one year today. And forget about the policy and whether you like it , as an exercise in MMP, of sticking together, of being coherent, this lot have been good.
We've had no bitching, no infighting, no instability."
NZ First Superannuation Bill.
20/10.
"20/10, as in years. Makes sense on the logic test. 10 years, and you get super for the rest of your life?
In what part of the world does that make sense? Especially given the OECD average is 25 years."
Recruitment Drive for Overseas Teachers.
8/10.
"2000 applicants and counting.  As a recruitment drive it seems a hit.
And yet how is it all these people want to come and work here, when the unions absolutely insist it's so miserable?"
30K Speed Limits in Wellington and Auckland.
3/10.
"See they cant regulate enough, can't control us enough.
And the irony will be the e-scooter will be the fastest thing on the road. That's how wacky the world we live in nowadays really is.
