You know him as a judge for music competition/"reality" shows like The Voice and Songland... You've heard his voice on the radio at some time or another whether you've known it or not... You've seen his perfect L.A. model face with a spiked hair/five 'o clock shadow combination that has not changed in over a decade... But before Adam Levine became the pop culture mogul that he is now, he was just a lead singer in brand new band called Maroon 5. Their debut 2002 album "Songs About Jane" was about to launch them into the stratosphere, eventually gaining the album quadruple platinum status, but it would be a slow launch. It might be hard to think of Maroon 5 as underdogs, but at the time they did not have much influence and their R&B/Funk/Pop inspired style was not well received by critics. It was pop rock, but it was not interested in emulating "rock" at all. It had an edge to it that set it apart from traditional pop music, but it was written and performed by the band, so it was more than just pop music. In the tradition of Oasis, a band they they held in high regard, it occupied a space that had alternative roots, but could be extremely marketable. For the next few years, Maroon 5 toured on "Songs About Jane," gaining quick notoriety by opening for John Mayer (college friend of guitarist James Valentine in his 2003 tour. While their songs steadily rose up the charts, they were fortunate enough to tour with the likes of Michelle Branch, Matchbox Twenty, and The Rolling Stones, proving immediately that they could perform alongside other giants of the pop music industry. If you watch TV or pay any attention to pop culture, you know the rest. Pop Rock blew up radio stations for the rest of the 2000's and Maroon 5 & Adam Levine became household names. Join Brad, Jon, Dave, Scott, and brief guest appearances from Adam Levine and Jane herself all on today's episode!!!
