After the man is made and brought to his task, God puts the man to sleep to prepare the woman. This 'sleeping' in Genesis 2 is a change in focus from the man to the 'wo-man'. The man is 'off the scene' and God is preparing the woman to come forth out of him. It is after this that the woman is finally made from the rib of the man. This shows that the woman is to be by the man's side and not behind him. The union of the man and the woman comes from the making of the woman. How a man knows that a woman is his is that she comes out of him. If a woman has not come out of the man then she is not his. It is only in recognizing this that the man called the woman "bone of my bone".
