Spouses of intimacy anorexics often feel alone and disconnected. The pain and trauma as a result of being disconnected is often overwhelming. However, through the 12 Steps program, those who are married & alone can heal and move forward in life. Dr. Doug Weiss, Licensed Psychologist and national author, covers Step Six of the recovery journey.
Step Six states “we’re entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character”.
Recovery and healing are all about the removal of what doesn’t work in our lives anymore. Since you have completed Step Four and Five, you have had things revealed to you about what you need to get rid of. As you do each step, it returns a gift back to you, making you a better, stronger, and more vibrant individual in life.
As someone who is feeling married and alone, maybe there are unhealthy coping mechanisms that you have turned to in order to cope with being married to an intimacy anorexic. Maybe these unhealthy coping mechanisms have hurt you or even other important people in your life.
In previous steps we discovered how we harmed ourselves and other people by acting out on our character defects. We learned about patterns in behavior and that we are likely to act the same way with the same defects over and over. This knowledge helped us to become ready to have these defects of character removed.
